Five Ways to Quit Smoking

It’s 2019, which means that everyone is aware of just how damaging cigarette smoke is, and if you’re still a smoker there’s never been a better time to quit. Thankfully, there are loads of things you can do to help you quit, and we thought we’d take a look at some of them in more detail.

Vaping

Vaping is now the most popular method of quitting cigarettes, and it can save you huge amounts of money in the long run, too. Once you’ve bought your e-cigarette, you can choose from a huge range of eliquid flavours and the whole setup will cost significantly less than smoking.

Cold Turkey

Some people choose to go cold turkey when they quit smoking, which means putting the cigarettes down and not using any other methods to help you. It takes a lot of willpower to go completely cold turkey and people who chose this method are most likely to fail and go back to smoking again.

Nicotine Replacement

There are a whole load of nicotine replacement products out there and whole they’re better for you than cigarettes because they don’t contain tar and other nasties, they replace one crutch with another and eventually you’ll need to quit the patches or gum, too!

Therapy 

A lot f people who smoke do so because of the habit, needing something to do with their hands and a lot of people replace another habit with smoking, so it stands to reason that some sort of behavioural therapy would help you to quit. A therapist can help you to identify triggers and find ways to replace the habit of smoking with something more positive.

Medication

In the worst cases, there are medications that your GP can give you which will help you to stop smoking. You should only resort to medications if you’re finding it impossible to quit with any other method and your GP will be able to give you more information about the medications available.

Vaping in Public – Should it Be Allowed?

A few weeks ago, Husband and I went on a rare night out for our friends’ 40th birthday. We went for a meal and a few drinks and a brilliant night was had by all (even if it did go far too quickly!). After we’d finished our meal, we went to a bar we’ve been to lots of times before, and as I was walking out of the door to use my e-cigarette, a bouncer stopped me to ask if I was going outside to vape (I got my e-cigarette from a vape store online). I confirmed, and he said something frankly fabulous to me:

“You don’t have to go outside to vape. You can use it inside”.

So disbelieving was I that I asked the doorman to repeat himself, but he was 100% serious. The venue we were in allowing vaping inside. Being able to sit at our table and use my e-cigarette made my evening so much more enjoyable for me (obviously, I checked that my friends were okay with it, too) and it got me thinking – should more places allow vapers to vape indoors?

It seems I’m not the only one to have had these thoughts – an official report has been released which says that making vapers stand with smokers to use their e-cigs is doing more harm than good. Many people use e-cigarettes to help them quit smoking conventional cigarettes (something which currently costs the NHS £2.6bn per year) and exposing quitters to cigarette smoke could cause a slippery slope back to smoking again.

Quitting smoking has been shown to be so much easier with e-cigarretes – an estimated 2.9 million adults in Great Britain currently use e-cigarettes and of these, 1.5 million people have completely stopped smoking cigarettes. They carry a fraction of the risk of cigarettes and can be particularly effective when combined with extra quitting support.

5 Unexpected Benefits of Vaping

vapingAs you’ll know if you read my blog regularly, I’m a bit fan of vaping. I haven’t smoked for years, but I’ve always missed nicotine and when I discovered that I could basically have all the nicotine I wanted without all of the health risks of smoking, I was ALL IN. I started with a slimline e-cig and moved to one with a larger tank and battery, and I just keep discovering more and more benefits of vaping, so I thought I’d share some of them with you.

You Don’t Need to Brave the Cold

Vaping doesn’t have second-hand smoke risks, nor make the whole house stinks, so although we don’t vape in the same room as the girls, we often sneak into a different room for a quick vape, which means that we won’t have to go out in the cold when the winter arrives!

Easy Charging

Most e-cigs charge using a micro USB, which we have LOADS of around the house. Most of the chargers at Greyhaze are quick and easy to use, and can be plugged in anywhere, even in the car, which means you don’t have to worry about running out of power when you need it the most.

With smoking you get two options: tobacco and menthol. With vaping, you can have those traditional flavors along with a myriad of fruits, deserts, and drink options. And who doesn’t like more options?

You Can Just Have a Few Puffs

Vape Your Way Through No Smoking Day

It’s been many years since I gave up smoking cigarettes, apart from the very rare drunken night out where I succumb and smoke one or two, but that’s literally been about twice in the last ten years! I do, however, enjoy the occasional vape, and it’s got me thinking about the benefits of using a vape pen ahead of the NHS’s National No Smoking Day. Here are just five things that vaping can do for your health:

Weight Loss

I’m a classic “quit smoking and gained weight” case, where I replaced the cigarettes with food to fulfil my oral fixation and hand-to-mouth habit, and I’ve struggled to control my weight ever since. However, vaping instead of smoking reduces the appetite and replaces food with a healthy alternative to cigarettes, which was more than enough incentive for me to buy a kit and give it a go.

Pain 

As someone who has certain chronic illnesses and pain to deal with, using a vape to inhale CBD oil can really help to control the pain. It has anti-inflammatory properties and has been amazing at helping with my gynae pain.

Anxiety

In addition to CBD being a great ally against pain, it’s also been amazing for helping with my anxiety and vaping it is a much nicer way to ingest the oil than just dripping it into your mouth. CBD has been shown in studies to be just as effective as valium for some people dealing with anxiety, but with none of the side effects or addictiveness, which is remarkable for people who don’t want to use heavy pharmaceuticals.

Concentration

Believe it or not, nicotine is actually good for you in some ways, it’s all the OTHER parts of cigarettes which are bad for your health. Nicotine can actually improve focus, concentration, memory, refine motor skills and increase creativity.

Protect the Brain

Long term studies have shown that nicotine can actually protect the brain and as such has potential for treating patients with Alzheimer’s, Parkinsons and other degenerative brain issues. This means that choosing an e-liquid which contains nicotine can actually help your brain in the long term.

Quit Smoking, Start Vaping

I, rather embarrassingly, was one of those kids who tried cigarettes at FAR too young an age. In fact, I first got caught smoking at the age of 11 (and got my legs slapped all the way up the stairs to my room). That love affair with nicotine continued for many years and by the age of 20, I was on 20-30 a day, something which I shudder at now when I think of the money I spent and how badly I was risking my health. I finally quit in 2007 – I had horrendous morning sickness (although I didn’t even know I was pregnant at the time) and it completely put me off of cigarettes and I managed to quit without even trying.

I’d tried to quit a few times before as Husband had already given up over a year earlier and I hated being the only weak one, but I struggled. Vaping as a Safer Alternative to Smoking

According to the most up-to-date research on e-cigarettes, they are a massive 95% less harmful than tobacco, and they’re supported by Cancer Research UK, who feel that they are an excellent tool in helping people to move away from the toxic chemicals within cigarettes.

I must admit, I can’t quite get used to seeing people puffing away on them indoors and I find the massive plume of ‘smoke’ that is exhaled absolutely fascinating! A good friend of ours, who’s girlfriend has just given birth to their first baby, has managed to successfully quit cigarettes by using an e-cigarette and it means that he still gets a nicotine fix without tons of harmful chemicals (and lets face it, serious STINK!) clinging to him when he wants to indulge.
