Help Your Schools to Get Out and Grow!

Here at Mum’s the Word, we’ve been long-time supporters of the Get Out and Grow campaign, pioneered by Sudocrem, in association with Greenfingers charity and Cliffton Nurseries, with the goal of getting children out of the house and into the garden. They sent us some facts which are, quite frankly, a little bit sad..

Despite the fact that 87% of British households have a garden, over half of British children between 4 and 8 are unable to name 5 vegetables or fruits grown in them and 95% were unable to name 3 herbs. Many of those couldn’t identify gardening tools, with only 8% able to identify a trowel, 80% never having seen a rake before and, worrying, 79% believing worms are bad for plants.

73% of those asked said they had never grown a sunflower, while only 8% had ever picked an apple, which perhaps explains why they’re unable to name even one. Less than 10% had dug up a vegetable and only 6% had ever eaten a fresh pea from the pod. Based on this evidence, it is perhaps unsurprising that only 20% have ever eaten a vegetable they’ve grown themselves.

Sudocrem is now expanding the initiative to include schools, based on the figures that 90% of children said that they would like a garden at school and at one primary school in Lincolnshire, a school garden made all the difference when it came to pupil’s behaviour.

The Benjamin Adlard Primary School, run by headmaster Sam Coy, was previously rated by Ofsted as one of Britain’s worst schools. Four years and one school garden later, and the Gainsborough school has won the national Pearson award for School of the Year: Making a Difference.

Headmaster Coy insists: “The children absolutely love den-building, just generally getting dirty and nature hunts. One child recently told me that he loves going to the forest school on a Tuesday afternoon so much as it helps him to behave all week as he never wants to not be able to go.”

We’re absolutely delighted that Sudocrem is offering people the chance to nominate schools which they think could benefit from their very own gardening kits, and they’ve asked Mum’s the Word to be an ambassador for the project.

All you need to do is comment below the name of the school you wish to nominate and why you think they deserve one of the kits, comprising of gloves, spades, wheelbarrow and much more to get the school’s garden into full bloom. The kits are worth £160, but having the tools to get outside could be worth SO much more to the kids of the school you nominate.

Leave your comment by Sunday 9th of June and we could have the kit sent to the winning school before the summer holiday begin.

(Winner will be chosen by me, prizes will be provided by Satellite PR and sent straight to the winning school, no monetary alternative will be offered, all decisions are final)

Win a Copy of Jumanji on DVD

Husband and I are huge fans of the original version of Jumanji, so we have to admit to having been sceptical when the remake was announced. However, once we saw it (and also realised that it had The Rock in it, who be both kinda love…) we realised that it was actually an excellent film and was a really well-made update to a classic. We both love Robin Williams and are probably a bit over-protective when it comes to his work, but they’ve done an amazing job and bringing the story into the 21st Century.

Fancy getting your hands on the amazing Jumanji DVD which was released only last year – for free? Well you are in luck! This film, starring none other than the The Rock, takes four friends on a journey through a tropical adventure after finding an old console game which transports them to the jungle.

If you love the jungle and games, then why not take a step into the jungle yourself. Bgo.com which offers free spins when join has array of jungle themed games that will get you in the mood after watching this great film. One of the most exhilarating of these is Amazon Queen, which really thrills and excites casino players new and old. This jungle-based slot focuses on the Amazon Queen, it has all your favourite characters from the movie including, gorillas, parrots and other jungle themed forest creatures and phenomena.

If you are complete Jumanji mad and want to try some other slot games, then Go Bananas, Rainforest Dream and Forest of the Wonders are some other great games. Other than the standard 3 and 5-reel slot games, Jungle Madness is a progressive jackpot game so its makes the jungle experience a little bit more enticing! If you hit all 5 tigers on the payline then you can potentially be taking home thousands of pounds!

Jungles are not for the faint hearted, so if you the love the danger and thrill of Jumanji, these other casino games will certainly live up to your expectations. The immersive experience will convey you to the jungle where you will need to keep an eye out for snakes, gorillas, and lots of creepy crawlies beneath you.

Hopefully you will have been awarded for the epic journey with Jackpot wins or something little less but overall the fun experience of these games is what we think is best!

MUM’s Office Diary Review and Address Book Giveaway

You’d think, given the amount of time that I spend on my smartphone, that I would be using it’s calendar to its fullest potential, using it to organise the family, but regardless of what device I’m using I’ve just never really liked using a digital calendar. I think it’s because I like it all just there to see, on a page, in my own handwriting preferably. I’ve been looking for a paper diary for 2017 for a while now, something that I can use to keep track of the whole family but haven’t been able to find anything which has everything I need…until I discovered MUM’s Office!

This is the Mum’s Office MUMs Diary 2017, with a week-to-view on one page and a grid arrangement on the opposite page, allowing me to have a column for myself, Husband, Sausage and Burrito Baby. I chose the French Navy colour which comes with teal print inside, basically my two favourite colours, and it looks really stylish (something I am usually NOT!).

MUM's Office Diary 2017

What I love about this diary is that it has SO many little clever touches to make your life easier. There’s an elastic loop on the side to keep your pen attached (how many hours have I lost to spending time digging in my bag for a pen?!), there’s a cardboard pouch on the inside back cover for keeping slips, receipts and all the other annoying bits of paper which usually end up on my car floor, there’s a whole section for logging pocket money (the ex-accounts assistant in me finds this very appealing!) and it all just looks lovely.

MUMs Office Diary 2017

Another part which is absolutely genius is the “In Case I Lose my Mobile” section, a whole area for writing phone numbers just in case your mobile phone goes walkies, as well as term planners, important info for you, your partner and your kids and even a section for planning travel. You might think that a diary containing this many pages would need to be huge, but it’s a really good, baggable size without being heavy or cumbersome. Honestly, I’m in love.

The lovely folk at MUMs Office also make address books and they’ve kindly given me one to give away to my lovely readers. All you need to do is fill in the Rafflecopter widget below for your chance to win! I’ll draw the winner on Christmas Eve at 5pm and the prize will be sent out as soon as the postal service resumes.

Baby Food Giveaway

When it comes to feeding, Sausage and Burrito Baby were pretty different. With Sausage, she was our first and we truly lived in a Sausage-centric bubble. This meant that I spoon-fed her with organic purees of fruit and veg, or home-made and bulk frozen meals that I’d made myself, for probably longer than was absolutely reasonable. I was just about as overbearing as any good Helicopter Parent can be and whether it was a good thing or not I’ve yet to decide.

Food for Babies

With BB, things were different. Not only was I six years older and wiser, having already raised one kid past babyhood, our lives were very different. No more lazy mornings spent in our PJs watching Cbeebies, BB was thrust onto the school run with us within a week of being born! This meant that by this time, I was opting for easier options such as pre-made food for babies and a healthy smattering of Baby Led Weaning by the time that she was old enough. I may be been a little more ‘low-effort’ with BB, but if anything it’s made her more independent and also more capable with a spoon or fork than Sausage was by the same age.

One advantage to spoon feeding was that I always knew exactly how much Sausage was eating when she was little, whereas with BB is was more of a guessing game; adding up what was left on the plate with what was smeared on the floor/in her hair and working out how much food had actually made it into her tummy! Still, she’s got a massive appetite and likes to graze all day long, so snack foods are definitely her choice, above full meals.

baby-led-weaning

We’ve teamed up with a great company to offer our American readers a $50 gift card – all you have to do is leave me a comment below telling me what you fed your baby when they were little, whether you went for pre-made food or Baby Led Weaning (or any other approach that I may not even have heard of!) The winner will be chosen at random on 15th October 2016. Don’t forget to share this post with your friends so that they can be in with a chance of winning, too!

Mum’s the Word 4th Anniversary Giveaway!

prizesOn 4th October, I realised that it had been 4 years since I started Mum’s the Word (you can find my first ever post here) and it felt like something which should be celebrated. You see, I’m rather flighty when it comes to personal endeavours and I’ve never, EVER stuck at a hobby or pastime for as long as this, although seeing as blogging is now my job as well as my hobby, I guess you could say it’s evolved into being so much more than a way for me to get my ramblings out.

ANYWAY.

To celebrate, I thought I’d do a bit of a giveaway and I’ve got some lovely things to be won! Each prize has it’s own Rafflecopter widget below and you can enter as many of them as you like.

Firstly, my lovely friend Donna at Little Lily Pad Co. has given me a gorgeous pink baby sock bundle (seems appropriate seeing as 2014 was the year I gave birth to my second baby girl!) to give away, which you can win by filling in the Rafflecopter Widget below:

Our next prize is something that I’m so in love with; my friend Jenny, who blogs at Cheetahs in my Shoes, is one of my favourite photographers in the world – she was recently commended at an awards ceremony by the Zoological Society of London for her nature photography and is going to be published in one of their books! She’s given us a canvas print of a rose that she shot herself, my favourite flower.

Next, we’ve got a truly beautiful prize for all you babywearers, a Rockin’ Baby pouch in their Peacock print, which fits newborns up to 18kg. BB and I have been testing one of these recently and will be giving you our review next weeek! a Rafflecopter giveaway

Last but definitely not least is a brand who BB and I absolutely adore, Sophie La girafe, who’ve given us an utterly adorable dress-up tabard which comes in sizes 3 months to 3 years.

Win A Bouquet from Serenata Flowers

I’m sorry, I know I’m a walking cliché, but I really do love receiving flowers. They brighten up a room and make me feel special, which is something that everyone should feel from time to time. I’m not one-sided though, Sausage and I have been known to buy Husband flowers to brighten up his office – flowers shouldn’t be gender restricted as far as we’re concerned! For readers in Australia, Flowers Across Sydney can deliver flowers directly to you.

Sausage actually received her first ever bunch of flowers today. Husband and I went to see her in her very first school play, where she took the esteemed role of Mary, so we thought it only fitting to present our little performer with a bouquet of her own. We opted for a small bunch of soft pink roses and she was absolutely delighted!

Christmas Celebration Bouquet

The lovely people at Serenata Flowers have some gorgeous seasonal bunches available, as well as lots of beautiful classic bouquets that would brighten anyone’s day and the good news is that they want to give one away to one lucky Mum’s the Word reader. You’ll get up to £35 to spend on the site and all you need to do is leave me a comment by the 16th December telling me which bouquet you’d choose if money were no object from the Serenata Flowers site. For an extra entry you can also tweet the following:

“I want to win with @jaynecrammond and @SerenataFlowers and you can too, just go to http://wp.me/p2oKoO-2rt to enter”

Good luck!

The giveaway is open to mainland UK readers only. Closes at midday on 16th December, winner will be chosen are random and no cash alternative will be offered.

Moshi Monsters Trunki Review and Giveaway

Recently, we took Sausage on her first weekend away and suffice to say, she absolutely loved it. We stayed in a hotel for one night before going to watch a football match, and she was probably the most excited I’ve ever seen her about sleeping in a room that wasn’t her own, which had a TV on the wall and a bathroom attached to it.

What she loved most of all was being able to pack a bag of things that she’d need to take with her for the weekend; Sausage is MAD about bags and cases – there’s a running joke in our house that if something goes missing, the first place you should look is inside Sausage’s handbag collection. Ever since she was little, one of her favourite things to do was pack her toys inside a bag and pretend to be going on a trip, so when the people at Trunki got in touch, I knew we’d be on to a real winner with Sausage. Here’s the case we chose:

Poppet Moshi Monsters Trunki

Moshi Monsters are definitely the ‘in’ thing at the moment, Sausage has a huge collection of Moshi merchandise and toys, so we knew that the Poppet Trunki would appeal to her. Here’s the blurb:

Poppet is every bit as cute as her name suggests. With twinkling eyes and bright blue boots (wheels!) she’s the ultimate travelling companion for little monsters! Trunki was created to beat the boredom so often suffered by travelling tots. Designed to be used as hand luggage, kids can pack Trunki with all their favourite belongings whilst parents keep them in tow. It’s made from the same lightweight, durable plastic as adult cases, and has a generous 18 litre capacity for toys, games and spare clothes. Trunki comes with its own passport, which you can register online and fill with fun, travel friendly activities for the journey.

This would make a gorgeous gift for Christmas for any Moshi-mad kid, and even if they aren’t as Moshi crazy as Sausage, there’s a whole range of cases for kids to choose from.

Now, here’s the good news – we’re giving you the chance to win your very own Moshi Trunki! You can choose from the gorgeous Poppet case above or the equally awesome Katsuma Trunki.Katsuma Moshi Monsters Trunki
