Best Friend Gift Ideas and Inspiration

Buying a Gift for your Best FriendPhoto by Court Prather on Unsplash

Buying a present for a female best friend can be tricky. You probably know her likes and dislikes inside out, and could spot her style from a mile away, but that doesn’t always help when it comes to buying a gift. You want something special but also practical that she’ll actually get some use out of, but the two don’t often intersect. With that in mind, I thought I’d share some ideas and inspiration of what to buy your best friend for a special occassion, or when you just want to remind her how much she means to you:

A Trip

What better gift to your best friend than the gift of quality time spent together? Okay, so a jaunt to New York may be out of your budget, but a day trip to London or your nearest city for lunch and some sightseeing (or shopping!) could be an amazing way to show your best how much she means to you. You could even book a hotel and make a whole weekend out of it, allowing you to really let your hair down.

Unique Jewellery

Going and buying your bestie some generic jewellery might be an easy option, but it won’t neccessarily be well received. However, if you opt for some unique jewellery with a design that suits her personality, it’s likely to be a gift that she will love and cherish forever.

An Experience

Kind of like a trip, but with a difference! Is your bestie a thrill seeker? Is there something she’s always wanted to do? Booking an experience day for her means that not only will you get to spend time with her, but you’ll get to watch her tick something off of her bucket list. A couple of years back, Husband booked me a zoo keeper experience to help care for raccoons and it was, hands down, the best gift I’ve ever received!

A Photo Book

If you have a whole bunch of picures of the two of you from over the years, a photo book could be an amazing way to memorialise your friendship. Spend just a few hours picking your favourites and using an online photobook maker and you’ll end up with a totally personalised gift which will bring back so many memories of happy times together.

Do you have any amazing ideas for showing your best friend how much she meas to you? Leave me a comment below, I’d love to hear from you.

Ways To Surprise Your Partner this Valentine’s Day

With Valentine’s Day just two days away, many of us will be thinking about ways to surprise our partner on the most romantic day of the year. Husband is insanely good at buying me gifts and getting me little surprises, and I’m pretty rubbish by comparison. With that in mind, I thought I’d look at a few ways that you can surprise your partner and make Valentine’s Day special.

Personalised Gifts

Husband doesn’t like big flashy gifts, but in the past I’ve had personalised gifts made for him, like the ones that you can get from Card Factory. As well as nice photo cards, I’ve had mugs made, large collage canvases and a few other things, and they always go down a treat.

A Nice Meal

For us, Valentine’s Day should be about spending time together, so a nice meal is ideal as you get quality time to talk. We like eating out, but as I’m a keen cook, I also sometimes surprise Husband with a nice meal at home. I think the steak with home made Diane sauce from a few years ago went down well as it’s one which has been requested again since.

An Experience

I’ve never bought Husband an experience gift but I think it’s something he’d like, providing I chose the right thing! He’s a fan of Islay whiskies, and I’ve always wanted to whisk him up to the Hebrides to visit some of the distilleries where his favourite tipples are made.

A Blast from the Past

Husband was a big fan of his Nintendo N64 back in the day, but never managed to complete  Goldeneye 007 on the hardest setting before his console died, so I’d love to find him the game and console to play through again. I’ve been keeping an eye on eBay and as soon as something comes along at the right price, I plan to scoop it up.

Male Grooming

Husband is, undoubtedly, the best-groomed person in the house. He always makes sure he’s well turned-out and loves an old-fashioned safety razor and shaving brush combo. He’s got a bit of a collection, in fact, and I’d love to find a really good quality addition to his current selection.

Do you have any big plans to surprise your other half, this Valentine’s Day? Do leave me a comment below, I’d love to know how it went!

5 Great Luxury Gifts for Your Man

Let’s be honest with each other here, as much as they wind us up, husbands and boyfriends are pretty great (usually). They’re our partners through life, helping us each step of the way! So when it comes to a special event, or when you’re just feeling grateful, it’s nice to get them something super special; a luxury item that they’ll be really thankful for.

These moments of love are great but equally, they come with a lot of pressure. You want to make sure that whatever you gift you choose is amazing and perfect but what are the options? How can you be sure it’s the best one for him? Fortunately, here we have a list of great choices to get your cogs turning, hope it helps!

Watches

Watches are a classic choice. Luxurious, stylish and suitable for both casual and formal events, you can’t really go wrong with a quality timepiece. On top of the general elegance, watches also serve a practical purpose that you can use all-year round (a rarity in most luxury items), so not only are you supplying your significant other with an exclusive piece of menswear, you’re also giving a gift they can actually make USE of. Everyone knows that practical gifts are the best ones.

Cufflinks

Cufflinks are an essential part of any man’s formal ensemble. They’re subtle, they’re fashionable and they can add that little bit of pizzazz to his look. The best part about giving cufflinks as a gift is that they come in so many different styles, making it easy to pick out unique designs that complement your spouse’s specific tastes. Tateossian cufflinks are some of the most distinctive and impressive available, definitely worth checking out to add that extra wow factor to your man’s outfit.

Cologne

Cologne is a typical gift option. Nowadays, designer fragrances can cost a fortune, bumping them up to the ’luxury gift’ zone, but boy are they worth it! There are few things as great as when your partner smells REALLY good, it just makes them more irresistible. On top of the great effects of cologne, as you’ll be the one buying it you can make sure you love the scent before purchasing. It’s a fool proof plan that results in a great smelling better half! Just to help you on your mission for the best fragrance, here’s Forbes’ nine best men’s colognes of 2018.

Sunglasses

The summer months have passed and we’re slowly edging into winter but that doesn’t mean sunglasses are a bad gift choice. Great for any bright day, sunglasses are versatile and useful all year round. One of the best things about sunglasses is the massive variety available. Everyone has different tastes, different styles and different looks, so why not look through your partner’s wardrobe and get a few ideas of the colours that might work? Alternatively, just ask him what he likes! Use articles that show off multiple styles to help you make an informed decision and you’ll find the perfect pair in no time.

Wallets

Last but not least, wallets are one of the few items that most men carry around everywhere, meaning they’re always going to appreciate an upgrade. Before you make your purchase though, it’s worth doing a little research. Take a look at what your partner’s wallet looks like already because clearly, they like that style, then find another that emulates it. It’s also worth keeping in mind the features available and the habits of your significant other. Does he carry change all the time? Then a coin pocket would be appropriate. Does he have LOADS of cards? Then make sure that whatever you pick has enough space to fit all of them. Regardless, there are so many styles of wallet available today that you should be able to find a suitable one easily.

These formal menswear gifts are great but there are hundreds of other luxury options, so don’t be afraid to experiment and pick out something your partner would love. Often the most unusual gifts are also the most thoughtful and the most loved.

My 33rd Birthday

This Sunday is my 33rd birthday. Woohoo, right? Except, not really – who actually celebrates being 33?! I’ve actually been spoilt rotten already by Husband – my laptop died a few weeks ago, so he bought me a brand-spanking new one as an early present, AND surprised me with a grey leather Pandora bracelet and moonstone birth charm that I’ve been coveted for ages last week! However, I usually get money as a gift from other family members, so I’ve been trying to think about what to spend it on (rather than doing what I do every other year and keeping the cash in my purse until it ends up being spent on takeaway or petrol!). Here’s a few things I came up with:

Garden Furniture

We’ve got an amazing garden where we live now, but it’s basically just a massive plain lawned area with a little bit of patio. I’ve been planning to get some garden furniture for ages so that we can make the most of our outside space but nothing struck my fancy until I looked at Nest. Their ranges are so much more contemporary than average garden furniture and it would look absolutely fabulous in our back garden!

A Latte Maker

Even though I’m on a strict low-carb diet, one indulgence that I haven’t given up is a daily latte. I have a loyalty card for the supermarket opposite Sausage’s school which entitles me to a free coffee and I do tend to go in most days, but I would absolutely love a proper coffee machine to enable me to make myself a decent drink at home.

Books

This one might seem really dull, but I used to spend a fair amount on books and I’ve basically stopped since the girls came along, I’ve got a list as long as my arms of things I want to read and since BB is starting school in September, I’ll have more time to read. I’ve been adding the things I want to read to a wishlist so perhaps I’ll start at the beginning and work my way through!

Perfume

The last time I bought myself a bottle of perfume was back in 2012, when I started a new job. The job didn’t last and the perfume is all gone, and although I’ve been bought perfume as a gift by Husband since then, I haven’t treated myself, so I might spend a morning at the perfume counter sniffing new scents and seeing what I like.

Afternoon Tea

This may sound bonkers seeing as EVERYONE seems to go for afternoon tea these days, but I’ve never actually been for afternoon tea before. Part of managing to be succesful on my diet has been allowing myself the odd cheat day here and there, and I think treating myself to an afternoon tea for my birthday would be the perfect cheat meal and celebration!

Eleventh Anniversary Gifts from F Hinds

This year, Husband and I will be celebrating our eleventh anniversary. We got married back in 2006, which seems like only yesterday but also a lifetime ago, all at the same time. We were engaged within six weeks of meeting and married within six months and had a LOT of doubters, expecting us not to last, so to be eleven years on and going strong I feel well within my rights to stick a big two-fingers up at the people who said we’d never last! We’re not perfect – no-one is – but he’s still my best friend, the person I turn to for advice and support and the person on the planet who can make me laugh harder than anyone else!

The traditional gift for 11 years is steel, which may sound like the least romantic thing ever, but F Hinds actually has a lot of things made from steel which would make a great anniversary gift – here are five of my faves for both men and women:

Husband is a huge fan of watches and loves both new ones and vintage, restored watches alike. This steel divers watch from Seiko is powered by kinetic energy and will never need a battery replacement, and can be adjusted in store for free to make it the perfect fit.

I really love the modern, contemporary design of this bangle, as well as the fact that there’s something a bit like the ‘eternity’ symbol about it, which makes it perfect for a romantic anniversary gift. I’m not a huge jewellery wearer, apart from my wedding ring and some earrings but I’d definitely wear this as it’s sleek, simple and unfussy.

Necklaces always make a beautiful anniversary gift and this statement piece from Fossil definitely fits the bill. It’s eye-catching and classic and also had a pair of coordinating earrings on the F Hinds site if you really wanted to treat your loved-one.

These days, many men wear bracelets and other forms of jewellery which may have previously only been worn by women and there are plenty of masculine styles on the market to choose from. This chain-link inspired bracelet would be perfect for the man in your life and has a heavy-duty clasp to ensure that even those with a more physical job or lifestyle won’t lose it.

Cufflinks are a great gift for any occasion and obviously, you’ll need to have a Husband with seriously good taste to appreciate these Liverpool FC ones 😉 (other teams are available if you’re unlucky enough to be married to someone with terrible taste in football teams…) You’ll be able to combine two of their loves at once with a reminder of their favourite team and a reminder of you!

Gift Ideas for Father’s Day

Okay, I know that we haven’t even had Mother’s Day yet, but I’m already thinking ahead to Father’s Day so that I can be super organised about what to get for not only my own Dad, but Husband also. I thought I’d put together a little post with some ideas that you can share, just in case you’re lacking inspiration for the men in your own lives!

Fishing Gear

I know a ton of blokes who love to fish and although it’s not something I’ve ever done myself, I can see the appeal of relaxing by a lake! Husband used to fish with his Dad when he was younger and would probably love to go again (especially as we live by a huge fishery!) so getting him all the tackle he needs would be a great gift. Wet Wellies sell everything you need for carp fishing in the UK.

A Massage

Massages are a great gift for anyone and Husband gets a lot of muscle soreness because he lifts a lot of heavy weights at the gym. I’m pretty sure that he’d really love a rub down and an hour or so of peace for Father’s Day and there are loads of great offers online if you search around.

Shaving Kit

Shaving is something that is super personal for a lot of men. Husband prefers to use a proper, old-fashioned double-edges safety razor and brush to shave with, but I know that some of our other male relatives use electronic shavers. Buying your Dad or partner some really decent shaving kit is a great Father’s Day gift and it’s something they’ll get a lot of use out of for the whole year. You could also start off by using an electric beard trimmer to thin the hair out before you shave, if you don’t have one, visit Gear Hungry to find the best ones.

Photos

Last year for Father’s Day I decided to get creative and make something special for Husband. I too three photos, one each of the girls and Chuck, each holding pieces of paper with “BEST”, “DAD” and “EVER” on them and then framed them in a white box frame with three sections. The overall effect was really nice and Husband absolutely loved it.

A Day Out

I know that a lot of Dads feel like they miss out on a lot of fun with their families if they’re at work every day and a decent day out can be a nightmare at the weekend, when everyone else is trying to do the same. Ask him to book a day off of work if possible and plan a whole day of family fun for you to all enjoy together. Make some memories at the zoo, a museum or somewhere more adventurous, and it’ll be something you’ll all remember for years to come.

Haven’t found the right gift yet? Never mind because there are plenty of cool men’s gift guides on Look What’s Cool to help you decide what to get!

Shopping For Weddings, Anniversaries or Christmas? Gorgeous Gift Ideas For Your Favourite Couples

Buying gifts can be tricky enough, but when you’re looking for a couple, it can be particularly challenging. You’ve got two people to please, and you probably want to avoid the cliches. Are you shopping for weddings, anniversaries or even tackling your Christmas list early? If so, here are some gorgeous gift ideas to consider.

Wedding gifts

Some couples send a wedding list or a polite request for donations towards a honeymoon. In this case, you should find shopping relatively straightforward. If there is no list, or you’re eager to buy something more sentimental or exciting than China plates or towels, there are other options. One idea is to buy vouchers. Vouchers may not seem all that original. But they give you a chance to spend money on things you want, rather than those that you need. You don’t have to choose a department or home store. You could buy vouchers for a restaurant, for example, and treat them to a slap-up meal. Home decorations always go down well. You can make your gift stand out by adding a personal touch. You could order a personalised cushion or print with the couple’s names and their wedding date, for example. Or you could indulge a passion for food with personalised mugs, glasses or a cheese board. If your friends are art lovers, a framed print is a thoughtful and unique idea. Likewise, if they love to travel, a scratch map is a great idea for brightening up dull walls and bringing back memories.

Anniversary presents

Many couples complain that they don’t spend enough time together. If you’re shopping for an anniversary gift for somebody special, why not treat them to an experience or a night away? You could book a spa weekend, afternoon tea or even an animal encounter or a track day. There are all kinds of options available for couples with varied interests and hobbies. Alternatively, trees and bushes make for unique anniversary gifts. If you know a green-fingered couple, this is a present that will keep on giving for years to come.

Christmas gifts

Christmas is a time for giving, and there are some fantastic options out there for couples. If you’re keen to think outside the box, swerve candles, vases, and matching bathrobes. Instead, put some thought into designing a bespoke hamper with all their favourite foods and drinks. Or go one step further, and organise a series of dates for them. Stuff some miniature envelopes with cash and a printed note outlining what they’re doing. You don’t have to spend a lot. You can treat the to a takeaway or a movie night at home. Print out a cinema voucher, or plan a trip to the zoo, a meal out, or a day at the beach.

Shopping for couples can be tricky. But if you put some thought into it, you can come up with incredible unique ideas. The perennial crowd-pleasers are fantastic, but it’s always good to be original. Tailor your ideas to suit the couple’s interests, and don’t be afraid to go for something a little different.

Unusual Gift Ideas

Once you get to a certain age, there are a few inevitable events for which you’ll need to buy a gift – baby showers, weddings and anniversaries are all a fact of life once you’re over 30, but finding things which are totally unique is the tricky part.

Uncommon Goods is a fabulous place to shop for gifts which won’t be the same as everyone else, and their ethics are really admirable – here’s a snippet from their Mission Statement:

At UncommonGoods, we want to change the way business is conducted by making sustainability a part of every decision we make. Each month, employees from all areas of our company gather to discuss how we can make UncommonGoods more environmentally friendly, socially responsible and an ever-more rewarding place to work.

I thought I’d show you some of my favourite items from the site.

Baby Shower Gifts
Baby Shower Gift
Mobiles are a fairly common gift, but in all my years of parenting I’ve NEVER seen a sloth-themed mobile! I absolutely adore this hanging treasure and would happily give it to any pregnant friend; it also works well for a boy or a girl baby, making it the perfect baby shower gift!

Anniversary Gifts

Anniversary Gift
This olive server is a genuine favourite of mine – there’s space for olives and picks, but also a concealed compartment for the pits, which is pure genius! Husband and I are huge fans of olives so this would be the perfect gift for our anniversary (hint hint!). It’s really kitsch and unique and I absolutely love it.

Groomsmen Gifts

Groomsmen Gift

When you’re getting married, you often need a ton of help from the wedding party, which means that buying a decent groomsmen gift as a thank you to some of the most important people in your lives is super important. This compartment valet is a great gift for a man, as it gives them somewhere to keep their keys, spare change and other pocket items, but the beauty of it is that you can personalise them with a message of thanks so that they remember your big day.

I Just Love It Whisky Gift Set Review

I think it’s fairly safe to say that everyone has someone in their lives who is tricky to buy for. Mine is my Husband. My ‘very good at buying gifts’ Husband, which makes my job so much harder around Christmas and birthdays because you can guarantee that he’s bought something amazingly sentimental and perfect for me (like the Teddy Ruxpin I’d been coveting for 25 years that he bought for my last birthday)! Enter ‘I Just Love It‘, a website which makes personalised gifts for people who can be a real pain to buy for.

I noticed they had a whisky gift set, which is labelled as a Fathers’ Day gift, but is actually perfect for Husband for Christmas. He’s a huge fan of whisky, with 16 year old Lagavulin being his usual tipple of choice. However, this gift set contains a whisky which is distilled on the island of Islay, one of the inner Hebrides, somewhere that Husband has been planning to go for a few years, so it seemed serendipitous to see it in the set.

Here’s the info:

Exclusive to I Just Love It, this Father’s Day Whisky Gift Set includes single malts from three of Scotland’s most famous whisky regions, including a limited release from one of Scotland’s sadly closed distilleries. Presented in a gorgeous hand-finished gift box with a personalised sleeve, it’s the ultimate way to compare and contrast the different characteristics of single malt from the Scottish Island, Speyside & Islay regions.

The set itself comes beautifully boxed with a personalised sticker on the outside which you can add your own message to and really is a lovely looking gift.

The set also comes with tasting notes and a tasting mat, allowing the recipient to really get involved with the whisky sampling process (rather than just glugging it down before it hits the sides!!).

The set costs £29.99 (plus P&P) and makes such a lovely gift for anyone with an interest in whisky, or even a complete beginner who you feel might appreciate learning about whisky and its origins. The girls and I were really impressed and can’t wait to give Husband his pressie!

Thanks again to I Just Love It, who sent us the set for review purposes.

Essence of Arcadia Aromatherapy Oils Review

When it comes to alternative medicines and therapies, I’m something of a skeptic. When I had acupuncture suggested to me whilst pregnant with BB, I couldn’t quite get past my doubts enough to bring myself to do it, however, aromatherapy is one thing that I’m quite open to. I think that smells can have a really powerful effect on moods and feelings, so when the guys at Essence of Arcadia got in touch and asked if I’d review their range, I agreed. I was sent the set of 6 and 14 oils, which retail for £19.99 and £34.99 respectively.

Essence of Arcadia

One of the things I loved when I opened the parcel was how neat and sleek the boxes containing the bottles looked, and it struck me that either set would make a really good gift. The smaller set contains cinnamon, lavender, frankincense, peppermint, tea tree and eucalyptus, whilst the larger set contains those six, plus orange, ylang ylang, grapefruit, lemongrass, bergamot, clary sage, rosemary and one called ‘Healing Blend’.

The first one I tried was ylang ylang, which is a beautiful, rich flowery smell and made our living room smell amazing. Cinnamon is the most fantastically Christmassy smell and we also tried blending it with orange, which was (if it’s possible) even more Christmassy; like a garland made of dried tangerines and spices. I used an oil-burner with a tealight as I already had one in the house but Essence of Arcadia also offer two different diffusers, which are an even better way to use your oils.

One of the things I love about both sets is that they come with what is, essentially, a recipe book for your oils to give you inspiration for how to combine them. My favourite was “Liquid Sunshine” which is made as follows:

LIQUID SUNSHINE

Refresh yourself and boost your energy with a combination of:

– 3 drops grapefruit essential oil

– 3 drops lavender essential oil

– 2 drops lemon essential oil

– 2 drops spearmint essential oil

All of the oils have a really rich, full fragrance which lasts for ages and I’d definitely recommend them to anyone with an interest in aromatherapy, or even just as a lovely gift for a dear friend or relative.
