Eleventh Anniversary Gifts from F Hinds

This year, Husband and I will be celebrating our eleventh anniversary. We got married back in 2006, which seems like only yesterday but also a lifetime ago, all at the same time. We were engaged within six weeks of meeting and married within six months and had a LOT of doubters, expecting us not to last, so to be eleven years on and going strong I feel well within my rights to stick a big two-fingers up at the people who said we’d never last! We’re not perfect – no-one is – but he’s still my best friend, the person I turn to for advice and support and the person on the planet who can make me laugh harder than anyone else!

The traditional gift for 11 years is steel, which may sound like the least romantic thing ever, but F Hinds actually has a lot of things made from steel which would make a great anniversary gift – here are five of my faves for both men and women:

Husband is a huge fan of watches and loves both new ones and vintage, restored watches alike. This steel divers watch from Seiko is powered by kinetic energy and will never need a battery replacement, and can be adjusted in store for free to make it the perfect fit.

I really love the modern, contemporary design of this bangle, as well as the fact that there’s something a bit like the ‘eternity’ symbol about it, which makes it perfect for a romantic anniversary gift. I’m not a huge jewellery wearer, apart from my wedding ring and some earrings but I’d definitely wear this as it’s sleek, simple and unfussy.

Necklaces always make a beautiful anniversary gift and this statement piece from Fossil definitely fits the bill. It’s eye-catching and classic and also had a pair of coordinating earrings on the F Hinds site if you really wanted to treat your loved-one.

These days, many men wear bracelets and other forms of jewellery which may have previously only been worn by women and there are plenty of masculine styles on the market to choose from. This chain-link inspired bracelet would be perfect for the man in your life and has a heavy-duty clasp to ensure that even those with a more physical job or lifestyle won’t lose it.

Cufflinks are a great gift for any occasion and obviously, you’ll need to have a Husband with seriously good taste to appreciate these Liverpool FC ones 😉 (other teams are available if you’re unlucky enough to be married to someone with terrible taste in football teams…) You’ll be able to combine two of their loves at once with a reminder of their favourite team and a reminder of you!

Gift Ideas

Something Different for your Anniversary

rolexThere are so many gifts which are traditional to receive on an anniversary or special occasion, but if you’ve got a Husband like mine who is ridiculously amazing at buying gifts, sometimes you have to think outside the box. I’ve been thinking ahead to Christmas and trying to brainstorm gifts for Husband and I thought I’d share some of my ideas with you.

Vintage Jewellery

Jewellery isn’t just a  gift for women, and Husband is a real lover of antique watches. There are some really beautiful watches out there which have been reconditioned with new leather straps as well as some which have really unique faces and lettering. Obviously, they’re not everyone’s cup of tea and plenty of people would just go straight for a brand new timepiece, but there are some really gorgeous antique option out there.

Days Out

Husband and I often get mired down in day to day life but we’ve been trying recently to make sure we spend more quality time together. Just recently I found a deal for tickets to watch an Ice Hockey match, so we’re making a day of it and having a meal afterwards, too. There are loads of inexpensive options for days out; sometimes Husband and I will just go for a long walk together.

Booze

Okay, this one isn’t for the tea-totallers amongst us, but it is possible to buy nice bottles with sentiment attached. Look for local vineyards or something which is produced somewhere with sentimental value – I know that Husband has been hoping to visit the Scottish islands one day and I bought him a Whisky set from Islay last year.

Make Something

Making something with your own hands is always a winner in terms of effort and care, and there are so many beautiful options which don’t cost the earth. One of my favourite crafty things I’ve seen is Scrabble tiles arranged inside a box frame to spell out names or words which are important to you as a couple.

Vouchers

I’m not talking about vouchers for a shop, I mean personal vouchers which you’ve made yourself. Offer vouchers for back rubs, watching films of their choice for an evening, a romantic meal or anything else that your imagination can conjure up!

Shopping For Weddings, Anniversaries or Christmas? Gorgeous Gift Ideas For Your Favourite Couples

Buying gifts can be tricky enough, but when you’re looking for a couple, it can be particularly challenging. You’ve got two people to please, and you probably want to avoid the cliches. Are you shopping for weddings, anniversaries or even tackling your Christmas list early? If so, here are some gorgeous gift ideas to consider.

Wedding gifts

Some couples send a wedding list or a polite request for donations towards a honeymoon. In this case, you should find shopping relatively straightforward. If there is no list, or you’re eager to buy something more sentimental or exciting than China plates or towels, there are other options. One idea is to buy vouchers. Vouchers may not seem all that original. But they give you a chance to spend money on things you want, rather than those that you need. You don’t have to choose a department or home store. You could buy vouchers for a restaurant, for example, and treat them to a slap-up meal. Home decorations always go down well. You can make your gift stand out by adding a personal touch. You could order a personalised cushion or print with the couple’s names and their wedding date, for example. Or you could indulge a passion for food with personalised mugs, glasses or a cheese board. If your friends are art lovers, a framed print is a thoughtful and unique idea. Likewise, if they love to travel, a scratch map is a great idea for brightening up dull walls and bringing back memories.

Anniversary presents

Many couples complain that they don’t spend enough time together. If you’re shopping for an anniversary gift for somebody special, why not treat them to an experience or a night away? You could book a spa weekend, afternoon tea or even an animal encounter or a track day. There are all kinds of options available for couples with varied interests and hobbies. Alternatively, trees and bushes make for unique anniversary gifts. If you know a green-fingered couple, this is a present that will keep on giving for years to come.

Christmas gifts

Christmas is a time for giving, and there are some fantastic options out there for couples. If you’re keen to think outside the box, swerve candles, vases, and matching bathrobes. Instead, put some thought into designing a bespoke hamper with all their favourite foods and drinks. Or go one step further, and organise a series of dates for them. Stuff some miniature envelopes with cash and a printed note outlining what they’re doing. You don’t have to spend a lot. You can treat the to a takeaway or a movie night at home. Print out a cinema voucher, or plan a trip to the zoo, a meal out, or a day at the beach.

Shopping for couples can be tricky. But if you put some thought into it, you can come up with incredible unique ideas. The perennial crowd-pleasers are fantastic, but it’s always good to be original. Tailor your ideas to suit the couple’s interests, and don’t be afraid to go for something a little different.

Almost a Third of my Life…

Today is a bit of a special day here in the MTW house – it marks the exact day TEN years ago that Husband and I became a couple. Ten years have passed, not without some major ups and downs, but quite honestly, I think Husband and I have basically beat the odds. No-one expected us to last as long as we did, especially when we announced our engagement just six weeks after meeting, but a decade later, almost a third of my life, one dog, two babies, eight house-moves, new careers and a whole load of life in between, here we are. As much as I’d like to remain dignified in my self-satisfaction, what I actually want to do is give a MASSIVE middle finger to all of our doubters.

I think most people who’ve been with someone for a whole decade will agree that marriage takes work. Unless you’re one of those weird couples who never argue (and I’m not sure they truly even exist, if I’m being honest), there will always be friction. Sometimes that friction feels too much to bear and I’m terribly guilty of failing to communicate at times, but Husband and I both work to make sure our relationship stays strong.

What I will say, though, is that although we sometimes argue, although things aren’t 100% perfect all the time, I’m still convinced that I made the right choice. I still find Husband absolutely hilarious, I still love our shared interests and tastes in music and films, as well as our differences and the fact that we learn from one another all the time. And, obviously, I still fancy him rotten *blush*.

With all that in mind, in honour of a DECADE of not killing one another, I thought I’d write some new vows for the next ten years together, just because no relationship is completely unchanged after ten years and I’m certainly not the same person I was when I was 21.

I promise…

…to do my best not to turn into my mother.

…to try to keep my tendency to over-react and be passive aggressive to a minimum

…to avoid rolling my eyes when you tell me how much you hate washing up

…to try stay awake through at least ONE film per week

…to be considerate of the fact that you’re not a happy passenger in cars and not take it as criticism when you point things out when I drive

…to never use the kids as a weapon or use you as a method of discipline when you aren’t here

…to put up with your farts…as long as you put up with mine

…to serve you smaller portions of dinner because I KNOW you can’t not clear your plate

…to try to stay young at heart and enjoy each other as the years go by

Romantic, huh? Maybe not, but sometimes it’s the practical considerations that we make for one another that remind us how much we’re loved. The fact that Husband knows how I like my coffee, or when he hoovers the car out even though I’m the one who let it get disgusting, or when he listens to me talk endlessly about the dramas which have turned me upside down over the past couple of years, always remaining on my side. That’s love, that is.

So, here’s to another ten years with my best friend and the best Dad I could wish for, for Sausage and Burrito Baby. Now, if he’d just vow to put his clothes in the washing basket, life would be perfect…!

Unusual Gift Ideas

Once you get to a certain age, there are a few inevitable events for which you’ll need to buy a gift – baby showers, weddings and anniversaries are all a fact of life once you’re over 30, but finding things which are totally unique is the tricky part.

Uncommon Goods is a fabulous place to shop for gifts which won’t be the same as everyone else, and their ethics are really admirable – here’s a snippet from their Mission Statement:

At UncommonGoods, we want to change the way business is conducted by making sustainability a part of every decision we make. Each month, employees from all areas of our company gather to discuss how we can make UncommonGoods more environmentally friendly, socially responsible and an ever-more rewarding place to work.

I thought I’d show you some of my favourite items from the site.

Baby Shower Gifts
Baby Shower Gift
Mobiles are a fairly common gift, but in all my years of parenting I’ve NEVER seen a sloth-themed mobile! I absolutely adore this hanging treasure and would happily give it to any pregnant friend; it also works well for a boy or a girl baby, making it the perfect baby shower gift!

Anniversary Gifts

This olive server is a genuine favourite of mine – there’s space for olives and picks, but also a concealed compartment for the pits, which is pure genius! Husband and I are huge fans of olives so this would be the perfect gift for our anniversary (hint hint!). It’s really kitsch and unique and I absolutely love it.

Groomsmen Gifts

Groomsmen Gift

When you’re getting married, you often need a ton of help from the wedding party, which means that buying a decent groomsmen gift as a thank you to some of the most important people in your lives is super important. This compartment valet is a great gift for a man, as it gives them somewhere to keep their keys, spare change and other pocket items, but the beauty of it is that you can personalise them with a message of thanks so that they remember your big day.
